Instant pain relief: A review of Pernaton

How many products, pills and potions have you tried and tested to find relief  for chronic pain? I’ve been through too many to list but, over the years, only one has stuck.

My mum called me in 2013 and told me that she’d been reading a women’s magazine and there had been an advert for Pernaton gel – recommended for people with arthritis who suffered from sore joints. I dismissed her, assuming this was yet another marketing exec promoting something useless.

A week later, a tube arrived in the post (apparently mum can’t resist a good advert!) and I promised her I’d give it a try. Fast forward a couple of months and in October 2013 I wrote this post about the things I rely on to help me cope with chronic pain. Pernaton made the cut. In fact, fast forward four more years and I still love it.

Pernaton uses green-lipped mussel extract along with a high content of Glycosaminoglycans – commonly used for joint function. It also includes 11 different minerals and 18 amino acids, without any chemicals or solvents. The mussels are ethically sourced from coastal waters in New Zealand, and the breeding is closely monitored by the Health Ministry.

So let me tell you why I love it. The gel is pearly white in colour, but clear when rubbed on to the skin. It’s not greasy, and it leaves a cool feeling to the applied area. It has a menthol smell but it’s not too strong, and it is the only thing that provides me with instant relief. I tend to use it on my neck, my knees, and hands which are the three joint areas I feel most pain. The relief isn’t long-term and I’m not suggesting Pernaton is a cure for chronic pain, but when I’m at work and I can’t turn my neck or use my hands, I find that applying Pernaton gives me the relief I need to carry on working and function like a relatively healthy human being.

When Pernaton got in touch with me a couple of weeks ago and asked if I’d be interested in trying their product in exchange for an honest review, I was delighted to reply and say I was already a loyal customer! Bloggers are often contacted by brands – and I am always careful to only work with companies that I genuinely like and, more importantly, think you will like. But this is the first time I’ve been contacted by a brand that I already use, love and will happily recommend to readers, so when they asked me to try their second gel, I was only too happy to give it a try.

The classic gel (the blue one) is meant for joint pain and this is the one I regularly use, whereas the gel forte (the red one) is meant for muscle massage. I figured the red would be ideal for my back and couldn’t wait to try out.

Now, I’ll be honest from the start… I love the classic gel much much more! The gel forte is a bit thinner than the classic so you need even less of it; these tubes are definitely value for money – they last ages. It’s a little bit greasier, but I think that’s because I’ve been using a bit too much. Instead of the cool, menthol feeling, it leaves a warm tingle. I imagine some people might love this, but I think I might be a little sensitive as the tingling and warmth verged on a slight burning sensation. So much so that I double checked the ingredients the first time I used it to make sure I wasn’t allergic to anything. It turns out it has cayenne pepper extract in – and that’s exactly what it feels like! It took a few uses and eventually I got used to it so I think I’ll persevere, but I definitely prefer the classic gel. It’s more comfortable and provides instant pain relief.

The gels come in three sizes; I have one in my bedroom drawer, several in the bathroom (for fear I’ll run out), one in my work locker, one in my handbag and one in my car. I’m not kidding – I love this stuff.

Have any of you tried Pernaton? Which gel do you prefer?

Please note: I have been given this product as part of a product review. Although the product was a gift, all opinions in this review remain my own and I was in no way influenced by the company. I only accept products that are in keeping with my blog, and that I genuinely believe will be of interest to A Life Less Physical readers.
